What Will the Sonics be Called When They Move To Oklahoma City?
It’s all but a done deal that the Seattle Supersonics are on their way to Oklahoma City after this season. What do you think the team will be called since Supersonics just doesn’t seem approriate in Oklahoma? What colors might they go with? Mascot?
I agree that a few teams such as the Lakers and Jazz kept their names but that was then and with all the marketing in today’s NBA I don’t think that would work. Memphis kept the Grizzlies but that fit in TN. Not only that but the new owner of the Sonics, Clay Bennett, is making it clear that this is his team and is doing away with any connections to the Sonics’ history in Seattle.
Ok, first all being from oklahoma, I am offended by the stereotypes. rednecks? Okies? Wow, did it take you two long to come up with those original terms?
There is nothing wrong with the nickname as is. We have Tinker AFB and it is a very large base (one of the largest in the country) and so there are plenty of airplanes thundering through our skies. However, others names that might be of interest:
Red Storm (plenty of red dirt here)
Bombers (old high school mascot located next to Tinker AFB)
Jets
Bulldogs (just like that name)
Our colors should be crimson and white, with a trim of gold.
P.S. They didn’t lie, they wanted to make sure that (Seatlle) fans kept your season tickets for this year. He gave Seattle the opportunity to prove that you wanted the Sonics, but your legislature didn’t budge. Besides, blame the gentleman that sold the franchise to Bennett &co, not Bennett for buying them.

Oklahoma City Thunder
The Oklahoma City Thunder is an Oklahoma City based professional basketball franchise that participates in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference in the NBA. The team’s home stadium is the Ford Center, Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma City Thunder was formerly the Seattle SuperSonics. While at Seattle, the team beat the Washington Bullets to clinch the 1979 NBA Championship, won its division six times, and qualified for the NBA Playoffs 20 times. The team was reestablished as the Thunder in 2008 due to a dispute between franchise owner Clay Bennett and Seattle lawmakers. The Tulsa 66ers is also owned by the Thunder, and is the latter’s NBA Development League affiliate.
The current head coach is Scott Brooks who succeeds P.J. Carlesimo. The team has had many famous players, including Gary Payton, called “The Glove”, who earned the team’s only Defensive Player of the Year in 1996, the only guard to have achieved the honor besides Michael Jordan. Payton is also the team’s all-time leader in points, assists and steals. Ray Allen is another famous former player, achieving the All-Star in all the six years he spent with the team, breaking the record for the most three-point field goals in a Regular Season in the 2005-06 season with a score of 269. Ray Allen was later part of the 2008 NBA Championship-winning team, the Boston Celtics. Hall of Fame inductees who have served the team are Patrick Ewing, K.C. Jones, Bill Russell and Lenny Wilkens.

I read an article the other day that said people in Oklahoma thought that the nation had forgot that terrible day when Timothy McVeigh commited murder by blowing up the federal building in Oklahoma City. I live in Arkansas, And I never have forgotten my neighboring state’s devastation. What are your views? How do you feel about what happened? Do you remember the feeling you had when you heard about it?

I was teaching school. An announcement was made for teachers to send one team leader to the office immediately. After she was informed, she told us. Since I taught Deaf kids, we turned on the TV, facing us, to see what happened. The schools went on lockdown and most parents came to get their kids saying they just wanted to hold them close that day. I think of the terrible losses often and pray for those affected. The Oklahoma City Bombing will never be forgotten. And how I felt, sad, very very sad at the state of America that someone could do that — an “American” no less! And I felt unsafe. My false sense of security living in the great and safe America was changed. Thanks for remembering too.
